So, you didn’t reach your financial goals in 2019… Congratulations!

And I really mean it, well done.

Well done for 2 reasons:

Firstly, it means that you actually established goals to begin with.  You took some time out to think about the future, to plan where you want to be and to work towards certain target.

Secondly, it means that you not only had a goal, but you had an ambitious one, one that you knew would stretch and test you. This means that hold yourself in high regard and want to play at a higher level in your chosen field.  And as you strive to play in a higher league that you are currently in, you will inevitably miss the mark every now and then.

As the psychologist Jordan Peterson puts it: “In life we get to pick our level of competition to some degree and if we pick a level where we are always winning, it means that you have picked the wrong level of competition.  To be a winner, you want to be on the edge, where your skills need to develop in order to win”

With that being said, it is always good to re-evaluate, study and learn from your past misses in order to move forward to a higher level.

Three points we can focus on 2020:

  • Consistency – Success is all about the small daily actions and habits you install in your life
  • Your Circle – You will become the 10th person of your 9 closest people, choose them wisely
  • Invest – In yourself: Read, get a mentor, be active, be alone.                                                                                                                           – In relationships – Call them, have dinner, have meaningful conversations.                                                                                     – Your money – Budget, have a goal, work with someone your trust.

The important thing is to keep going, keep setting lofty goals and as Paulo Coelho said in The Alchemist: “There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure.”
